Slab Sunday: Madura Gold granite

Madura Gold is quarried in a bedrock quarry formation in India.
Last week's Slab Sunday was Kashmire White granite, which comes from the same quarry as the Madura Gold.
Kashmire White comes from the lower level of the quarry.  The Madura Gold is the top 20 feet of the quarry which has been oxidizing for millions of years.  The oxidation is what turned the Kashmire White granite to the warm gold and caramel colors that are in the Madura Gold.

Madura Gold is one of our more popular colors that we sell.  I think it's because it's a warm, neutral color and the pattern is really easy on the eyes.  Also, it goes so well with every different cabinet color from white to dark brown.
We have a lot in stock right now for a really great price.  Go here for details.

Other names for Madura Gold include: Madurai Gold, Golden Oak, Giallo Madura, Gold Star and Madurei Gold.

Madura Gold can change quite a bit in coloring and veining from bundle to bundle, so I definitely recommend selecting your exact slabs.

Great Deal on Pre-Fabricated Granite, Marble & Travertine!

If you are looking for a good deal, but don't want an inferior product, we have a really great option for you.
We have pre-fabricated granite, marble & travertine.  These pieces are fabricated in another facility where that is all they do.  They come in vanity runs, kitchen runs and even islands.  They are cut to size and the edge is even already on them!  They come with a backsplash as well.  Pre-fab is also a good option for desks & bars.
These are great for diy-ers or we are happy to install them for you.
Either way you are getting a great deal on great stone.
Here are some pictures of what we currently have in stock.
Sorry the pictures are really bad, if you click on the name of each stone it will take you to better pictures.

    This is an island.
Below is Madura Gold as well.

(Sorry, Absolute Black is like a mirror.  It's impossible to get a good photo of it in our showroom with all the windows.)

Contact us today and we can help you determine if pre-fab is the best option for you.

The Power of Color Enhancing Sealer on Stone

Color Enhancing Sealer's are one of the tricks of our trade.
What is Color Enhancing Sealer?  It is a no-sheen penetrating sealer that is formulated to darken, enrich and highlight natural stone.  It rejuvenates the color and improves the appearance of worn or weathered stone.
We use it all the time when we do a Honed Finish on natural stone.  The Honed Finish can lighten up the color of the stone.  Some people like the lighter look, but generally we'll put the Enhancing Sealer on it to bring the color back out.

Here's an example of Absolute Black granite that we put a Honed Finish on...
As you can see, when we honed it the stone went grey.  The left side of the picture is Honed Absolute Black without any sealer.  On the right side I put a coat of Enrich 'N' Seal on it.  Huge difference right?

Here's another, less dramatic, example.  Below is Crema Marfil marble.  The left side of the picture is the marble honed without any sealer.  The right side has Enrich 'N' Seal on it.

I made the coasters for our Giveaway this week.  (Go here to enter!)  The stone is Seagrass limestone that had been tumbled.  When stones are tumbled they generally end up quite light and a little chalky.
I used to work in a tile showroom and tumbled stone was impossible to sell if we hadn't put enhancing sealer on it.  Once we put the sealer on it, people loved it!  When I worked there tumbled travertine was the #1 seller for kitchen backsplashes.  The trend has died down now, but I can't even tell you how many tumbled travertine backsplashes we sold!

Here are some pictures of the Tumbled Seagrass Limestone.  In the picture below the top row of tiles have been sealed with Enrich 'N' Seal, the bottom three have not been sealed at all.
Here's an individual tile that I sealed half of.  The Enrich 'N' Seal not only brings out the color in the Seagrass Limestone, it also brings out the fossils.

I generally only put one coat of enhancing sealer on stone.  If you want to darken it up even more though, you can do two or three coats.  When I sealed my kitchen, which is a honed granite, I actually did two coats.
Be careful when using color enhancing sealers, just be sure to follow the directions on the bottle exactly.  Sometimes you can see your wipe marks if you don't apply it correctly.  Most beginners are fine to seal tile, but if it's your countertop I'd recommend having your fabricator seal it for you.

    Slab Sunday: Kashmire White granite

Kashmire White is a great alternate to the oh-so-popular Carrara marble countertops that we are doing so much of right now.  It has the same white and grey tones, but since it's a granite you don't have to worry about etching, scratching and staining.
The other great thing about Kashmire White is it's a relatively low priced granite!

Kashmire White has a lot of movement in the pattern, but it is actually a fairly consistent granite from slab to slab.  That being said, I still strongly recommend you pick out your exact slabs.

Kashmire White is also called Kashmir White, Cashmere White, Kashmiri and Kashmere.

Kashmire White can be a more porous granite.
I recommend finding slabs that have been resined, this will help with staining a lot.  Also, just be sure to seal your countertops really well and keep them sealed and you'll be fine.

House Beautiful's Kitchen of the Year 2011

      It's that time again....
House Beautiful's Kitchen of the Year is now up in the middle of Manhattan's Rockefeller Center.
This year the kitchen was designed by chef Tyler Florence and designer Lori Yeomans.
The countertops are {my favorite} CaesarStone quartz.  The color is one of their new colors, #4100 Belgian Moon.  I really like this new color, you can see more pictures of it on CaesarStone's website.  I think it's going to be a good seller.

What I love about this kitchen...
      • The black countertops on the black cabinets.  It could look like a cave in some homes, but it's awesome here with all the windows.
      • The thick Mitered edge detail on the island.
      • The black farmhouse sink.....I really love this!
      • The beautiful Ann Sacks tile backsplash.
Honestly I'm not loving this kitchen nearly as much as I liked the Kitchen of the Year 2010 that was designed by Jeff Lewis
I don't think it's the color because I really do like the black, I think this kitchen is just way too cluttery for my taste.  I bet if they removed the gazillion items on the countertops I'd like the kitchen a heck of a lot more.
What do you think?  Do you like this year's Kitchen of the Year?

For more photos and information go to House Beautiful's website.
All of the photos here are from House Beautiful.

Also, today is the last day to enter to win the Whiskey Stones.  Go here if you haven't entered yet!

      Kitchens with Grey Cabinets

Everyday I am seeing grey cabinets more and more and I am loving them more and more.
Of course I love them the most with beautiful white marble on top!
Here are some beautiful kitchens with grey cabinets....

I like how Grey Cabinets aren't necessarily one "style" of kitchen.  They look great in really contemporary kitchens, traditional kitchens, country kitchens....and everything in between.  I am seeing grey cabinets in all styles of homes right now.

Also, check out an article I wrote awhile back called Using Gray in Your Kitchen.

My question to all of you is....  Do you think grey cabinets are going to stand the test of style time?  In 10 years are we all going to look at kitchens with grey cabinets and think "that was so 2011"?
I'd love to hear what you think!
